The Detroit Tigers delivered a strong performance on April 7, 2025, defeating the New York Yankees 6–2 at Comerica Park. Despite cold conditions and snow flurries swirling around the stadium, the Tigers stayed hot at the plate and on the mound, handing the Yankees another early-season loss.
Tigers Jump Ahead Early
Detroit broke the game open in the third inning when Andy Ibáñez crushed a three-run homer following back-to-back walks. The blast gave the Tigers a lead they never surrendered and immediately shifted momentum their way. Ibáñez’s timely hit was his first home run of the season and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
Later in the fifth, Justyn-Henry Malloy added to the lead with a clutch two-run single, extending the Tigers’ advantage to 5–0.
Mize Silences Yankees’ Bats
Tigers starter Casey Mize was sharp and in control throughout the game. He threw six effective innings, allowing only one run on four hits while striking out six. His command and poise kept the Yankees off balance, giving Detroit the edge it needed to secure the win.
Rodón Falters After Strong Start
Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón looked dominant early, retiring the first seven batters he faced. However, things unraveled in the third inning as he issued two walks and then gave up the pivotal home run to Ibáñez. Rodón ended up allowing six runs (five earned) over six-plus innings, striking out eight.
Missed Opportunities for New York
The Yankees had their chances but failed to capitalize. Rookie Ben Rice reached base three times, including a triple, but was picked off at third base in a key moment that could have turned the tide. Aaron Judge drove in one of the team’s two runs with a fifth-inning RBI single, but the offense overall struggled to find rhythm.
Defensive miscues, including a fielding error by Oswaldo Cabrera, also contributed to the Yankees’ tough day on the field.
